Holocaust Museum of Greece
Thessaloniki, Greece On the Historic Old Railway Station Site, from where about 60,000 Greek-Jews from Greece were sent north to the death camps during WWII, the Jewish Community in Thessaloniki is to commemorate the death of the men, women, and children lost. It is a two story building. Its lobby consisting of glass, random rails, and penetrating black steel, depicting with transparency the occurred violence, is on the exact footprint of the old station, and is framed with black granite slabs with window slices of light. In the back there is a memorial high fence hugging the site. On the fence name tags of all lost are attached in such a way that they can chime with the wind. The educational spaces within are for exhibits, classrooms, interactive programs, auditorium, café, library, gift shop, administrative and volunteer offices.
